How to Select the Right Size Rug for Your Bedroom
Choosing the right size rug for your bedroom depends on a few factors, including the size of your room and the furniture you have - specifically the size of your bed. We will break down all the details you need to select the right size rug for your bedroom.
Rug Size for a King Size Bed
When selecting a rug for your king size bed you have two options - an 8x10 or a 9x12. If you select an 8x10 rug your rug will start in front of your nightstands by about 6-12 inches. The more you pull it up in front of your nightstands the more rug space you will have in the front of your bed, which will help ground any additional furniture - like a bed bench. For a king size bed our preference is a 9x12 - this way you can rest the feet of your nightstand on the edge of your rug. However, you can still choose to move a 9x12 rug up in front of your nightstands by a foot + if you choose to have any additional furniture in front of the bed, for example accent chairs or a chaise lounge. In rare instances, for exceptionally large bedrooms a 10x14 may be more appropriate in which case it’s highly encouraged that you pull the rug under at least the front feet of your nightstands.
Rug Size for a Queen Size Bed
Both queen and full size beds have the same rug size recommendations. If you are tight on budget and space a 6x9 is the smallest option you have. If you chose a 6x9 we recommend pulling the rug out 6 inches - 1 foot in front of your nightstands. Typically the go-to size for a queen size bed is an 8x10 rug. This size will allow you to pull the top of the rug under your nightstands. In some instances, if you have a large bedroom footprint you may opt to go with a 9x12 area rug.
Twin Beds
When it comes to selecting rugs for rooms with twin size beds there is a lot more to consider. Unlike queen and king beds, twin beds are often not centered in the room, making centering the rug a bit more challenging. However, in most instances, we recommend a 5x7 area rug for twin beds so that the rug doesn’t seem out of proportion with the twin bed itself. This would also be true for cribs in nurseries whose sizing closely mirrors that of twin beds, although rugs in nurseries are typically centered in the center of the room while twin bed rugs are pulled up to or under the bed.
If you are working with a bedroom where you have multiple twin beds in the same room you can choose between a large 9x12 to be tucked up under both beds (but not resting under your nightstand), or a 5x7 in between the two beds running parallel to each bed. You could also choose to have runner in between the two beds, or to go in front of both twin beds. Our go-to option is to have a large rug that grounds both beds at the same time vs a runner.
