How to Style a Nightstand Like a Pro

When it comes to styling a nightstand it’s important that you keep things both functional and minimal. After all, the purpose of a nightstand is to keep the things you need at night close to you! That being said, I’ll share my formula for a well-styled nightstand showcasing a couple of different styles of nightstands.

Styling A Nightstand with an Open Shelf

These are your business on top, party on the bottom nightstands, and my favorite! I love the functionality of having a lower shelf to keep your next great read close by OR style with a nice pop of greenery! Nothing makes a space feel complete like a pop of greenery. When styling the top of your nightstand keep it to the rule of 3. Keep styling to 3 items or groupings on top of a nightstand that is 30” or wider. Now, obviously one of those items is your table lamp. From there, try a stack of books with a candle and a cute jar of matches, or try an alarm clock and some decorative beads on top of a book stack.

How to Style a Small Nightstand

The average size nightstand is only around 24” wide and is plenty for a queen size bed or smaller, while a 30” or larger nightstand is needed for a king-size bed. When styling a small nightstand drop our rule of 3 down to just 2 and use two items or groupings of items. If your nightstand is particularly small you may not even have a table lamp, in that case, you can style with a picture frame and lean it against your wall. You can also consider a wall sconce to light your space! In addition to your light or leaning art try a vase with some greenery. The most important thing to remember it so have objects of varying height for visual contrast.

Styling a Nightstand with an Oversized Lamp

There is nothing we love more than an oversized nightstand lamp to add a bold scale to a bedroom space. When you have a large lamp it’s important to keep balance in front of mind. For this example, we’ll revisit our rule of 3. Style with a table lamp and two other objects of varying height. Items like a stack of books with a nice clear vase and fresh greenery or a diffuser create a simple grouping. While a framed family photo adds height and keeps the things (and people) you love close.

Nightstand Styling Rules to Keep in Mind

On top: Keep to around four items, vary the scales, textures, and patterns of those items. Also, to keep things spicy, throw in some greenery or florals. It’s just something that will make you happy every morning and night. Trays are your friend and will add visual interest and help to corral things like small bowls, a water glass, and/or bud vase.

On bottom: You can use large books, trays, more decor items, etc. Just keep it tidy, visually balanced, and intentional looking. AND avoid clutter.
