How To Mix Throw Pillows on a Sectional Sofa

We are often ask how to make sectional pillow combinations look effortless. When mixing pillow combinations on a sectional, it's best to vary the sizes, textures, and colors of the pillows to create visual interest and depth. Don't be afraid to play around with different combinations until you find what works best for you. Below I walk you through step-by-step how to create the perfect sectional throw pillow combination. Still trying to decide between a sectional and a sofa? Here are 7 things to consider before you buy a sectional sofa.

Select Your Color Palette

First, you will want to start with your sofa color, from there you will want to select no more than 5 additional colors to use for your pillow combination. You will use your sofa color as the base color and will then build from there. We typically like 2-3 neutrals and 1-2 "pops" of color within the combination. If you first need help selecting a color palette for your space as a whole start here.

Master The Pillow Mix Formula

When it comes to mixing throw pillow patterns you will want to remember this formula:

  1. Solid or texture

  2. Small Pattern

  3. Large Pattern

You can use any mix of this formula to create coordinated pillow combos. You will want to layer different combinations of big pillow pattens, small pillow patterns, and solid or textured pillows to create dimension and cohesion. Browse some of our favorite throw pillow combos here!

Creating the Perfect Combination

First, you will want to start in the corner of the sectional with your anchor pillow. This pillow should be your largest pillow, we recommend 24x24, and the darkest or boldest pillow pattern. Next, layer your anchor pillow with 22x22 pillows using the pillow mix formula above. You can also add in a 12x20 or 12x24 lumbar. Next you will move to the edges of the sectional and will continue to pull the color palette out layering 22x22 and 20x20 pillows. We suggest 22x22 in most cases unless you have a low profile back cushion. We like to occasionally add a lumbar here as well for a nice casual look and recommend a 12x20 or 14x20.

Add Your Finishing Touches

Adding in a throw blanket within your color palette will give you a nice lived in, comfort first feel. Pulling it all together you will see your sectional pillows compliment and repeat other tones and elements in your space, creating an effortless & perfect throw pillow combination.
