How To Hang Curtains the Right Way
Hanging curtains may seem like a simple task, but this is one of the most common home decorating mistakes we see! Hanging curtains the right way can be summed up this way “high and wide.” When hung properly curtains give the illusion that your ceilings are higher and your space is larger. You can easily hang your curtains like a pro by following these three key steps.
Hang Curtains High
Hanging curtains high can give the illusion of a higher ceiling and make a room feel more spacious. It also allows more natural light to enter the room when the curtains are open, which can make the space feel brighter and airier. Additionally, hanging curtains high can create a more polished and sophisticated look for your windows.
To properly hang your curtains high you will hang your curtains half way between the top of your window frame and ceiling. Doing this is a great way to draw your eye up in any room.
To measure for the right size curtains, take the ceiling height minus the height of the top of the window trim to the floor, then divide by two. That will give you a good idea as to where to hang the curtains and the length of the panels.
2. Hang Curtains Wide
Hanging curtains wider than the window frame is done to create the illusion of a larger window. Wider curtains can make a room feel more spacious and add a touch of elegance to your home decor.
To properly hang your curtains wide extend your curtain rod between 8-15" beyond the window frame on either side. Not only will this make your windows look larger, it will also allow for more light to flow in.
3. Select the Correct Length for Your Curtain Panels
Always make sure that your curtains kiss, or just touch the floor. You want to avoid hanging them too low so they puddle, or too high so they show a gap underneath and make your window look small and squatty. We recommend measuring from just below your molding to the floor and subtracting 2-6” - that should give you an ideal panel length.
Most curtain panels come in these standard sizes:
84” - Ideal for 8 ft ceilings
96” - Ideal for 9 ft ceilings
108" - Ideal for 10ft ceilings
