Soothing Coastal Color Scheme

Coastal style is having a moment! We’re not talking crabs and sea shells but rather the soothing color scheme that reminds you of a day at the sea, or at the very least the spa. A coastal color scheme with neutral, blues and greens is sure to give you a great night’s sleep. To really nail this style in your home be sure to add lots of texture and subtle patterns.

Neutral Color Scheme

If coastal style feels too colorful, then just go for purely neutral. The thing about creating a neutral color palette for your bedroom is to utilize as wide of a range of the neutral scale as possible to add dimension and visual interest. Avoid the dreaded “camo effect” by adding in everything from black and navy to white, grey, and beige into your bedroom’s color scheme.

Layering Patterns

Patterns may scare some people but they are an excellent way to introduce color and movement into your space, you just want to be careful about where and how you use them. We recommend working with one large pattern, and 2-3 smaller or tighter patterns in a single space. Using neutrals and textures to break up the layering of patterns. This is a great idea if you want a more traditional flair in your bedroom.

Wow with Wallpaper

I know what you’re thinking, “wallpaper is such a hassle,” “isn’t wallpaper out of style” - to which I would reply “it doesn’t have to be” and “not at all.” Playing with wallpaper in your space, even if just on an accent wall, gives your space an immediate statement! With today’s removable wallpaper and a wide variety of options, you are certain to find something that fits your style and budget.

Go Bold with Art

The bed is almost always the focal point of a bedroom, so if you have a low profile bed or exceptionally tall ceiling it’s going to be important to balance those features by selecting the right size art to go over your bed. We love this design because everything besides the artwork is very simple and muted but the abstract circles make it feel bold and striking.

Center Your Bed in front of a Window

It can be challenging to figure out where to place the bed in a room like this, however, it can be a major design plus! We love how this bed is centered in front of the window with a simple white drapery panel and then the addition of trim work further helps offset the seemingly random window placement. The blue of the bedding helps pull your eye forward drawing it away from the window as well.

Don’t forget the Ceiling (AKA the 5th Wall)

We have been all about some stunning ceiling moments lately and this one really takes the cake! If you have an older home with tray ceilings, this could be an excellent idea for you! Whether you paint it an accent color, add wallpaper, or some detailed wood work like we see here, adding that additional detail helps draw your eye up and makes it feel intentional.

Tone on Tone Makes Statement Colors Soothing

How sweet is the little girl’s room? We love the blush pink accent wall and the colorful headboard. Don’t be afraid to play with color in a bedroom! They are a great place to break from the overall color scheme in your home because they are more private spaces that regular house guests likely won’t see. Playing with different hues of a single color makes a space feel clean an contemporary.

Oversized Headboards

Playing with scale and proportion in bedrooms is one of our designers’ favorite “hacks” for achieving a high-end design. If you have particularly high ceilings 10ft + you may want to consider an oversized headboard. We’ve seen some 7ft tall ones that with the right styling and nightstands to ground them help the bedroom feel luxurious and grand.

Statement Bedroom Chandelier

If you can do without a ceiling fan then you can opt-in to this bedroom design idea! Whether you have 9ft ceilings or 12ft ceilings adding a statement light fixture to the bedroom is a great way to draw emphasis and add a high-end look to your space.

Moody Colors

You don’t have to be afraid of dark colors in the bedroom. They can feel very sophisticated, warm, cozy, and even a little sexy. Working with more masculine moody colors works especially well when you have a good deal of natural light to play with.

Layering Bedroom Textures

Think beyond cotton when it comes to the materials and textures in your bedroom decor. We love playing with velvet in particular as a way to add a glamourous sophistication to the bedroom.

Oversized Area Rug

Our design team is in agreement that every bedroom needs an area rug. Yes, even if you have carpet in there already! Rugs in the bedroom help add color, pattern, and set the scale of the space. Playing with oversized rugs in the bedroom gives you the opportunity to add additional seating or a bed bench to make the space even more functional.

Sitting Room Area Inside Bedroom Suite

How is this for a master suite! If you have the space, adding a formal sitting area or even just an accent chair in the corner is a great way to add additional functionality to your bedroom. They key here is to consider function and how you actually use your bedroom.

Dark Accent Ceiling Color

If you want your space to feel more intimate and cozy, try painting the ceiling a darker color. It will trick your eye into thinking the ceiling is lower than it actually is. This could also be used in spaces with tall ceilings where you perhaps don’t want to draw as much interest to the ceiling height and prefer to ground the eye to something lower to the ground.

Curtain Wall Behind Bed

Pipe and drape works wonders in the bedroom to soften a space! The flow of the curtains really creates a sense of a luxury hotel. It’s also a great way to disguise windows that are different sizes but placed behind the bed. This is an old designer trick your welcome to use any time!

Modern Take on Traditional Style

This space is every little girl’s dream! Shoot I want butterflies in my bedroom too! This traditional space has a modern take because of its smart use of color. Keeping the bedding and nightstands white helps balance out the dramatic pink. The busy butterfly wallpaper helps tie the entire designer together.

Four Poster Bed

Four poster beds are having a major design moment. These aren’t your oversized wooden spindle beds of the 90’s, this is a more modern minimalist take. We love how four poster beds make an undeniable statement that “this is the focal point - look at me!” It’s important to consider your ceiling height and ceiling light fixtures when deciding if a four-poster bed is the right choice for your bedroom.

Multiple Accent Light Sources

I love how this bedroom design features not only two nightstands but two reading light sconces. This is an example of really understanding how you use your space. If possible, we like to have at least 3 light sources in a bedroom. Whether that be a floor lamp, table lamp, and ceiling light or perhaps can lights, accent lights, and a reading light.

Vaulted Bedroom Ceiling With Beams

Let the unique architectural features of your bedroom make a design statement! We love seeing beam work and shiplap on bedroom ceilings because not only does it draw your eye up but it adds movement and color to the space.

Oversized Nightstands

As we discussed earlier, playing with scale and proportion is especially fun in bedroom designs. In this particular space the nightstand appears to be almost 3/4ths of the length of the bed. The oversized scale helps mimic the long linear line of the window and gives the space a sense of groundedness which makes it feel really homey!

Hanging Pendant Bedside Table Lights

Lighting can make such a big statement in a bedroom, but what if you have to get a little creative with how you hang it? That’s where pendant lights come in. We love using pendant lights as bedside lamps particularly in more modern mid-century spaces where you’re likely to see lover profile beds. The line from the pendants helps connect the ceiling with the floor. Pendants are also great for freeing up valuable bedside table space so if you have a small space or minimalist style, you may want to give this idea a go!

Library Wall in Bedroom

Now, this just makes me happy! Bring your hobbies into your bedroom. If your bedroom doubles as an office space why not make that transition a design statement by working in a built-in bookcase. We love the effect this neutral bookcase has especially paired with the floating picture frames. It reads sophisticated and timeless!

Murphy Bed

The classic murphy bed is getting turned on its head as more designers opt into adding built-ins surrounding the murphy bed for additional storage and styling. We love the idea of a clean and functional look no matter if the bed is up or down.

Board and Batten Accent Wall

You didn’t think I was going to leave out accent walls, did you? The classic square board and batten is a great way to add a point of emphasis and a sense of sophistication to a bedroom. We love making the trim work an accent color to further emphasize the detail.
