2022 Interior Design Trends

It’s that time of year again, when we dive into what the “experts” are saying are the biggest interior design trends heading into 2022 and which former fads are exiting stage right. While there were many more trends I could have included on this list I filtered it down based on what I was seeing on a large scale not as much a regional one. Let’s see how many of these you’d consider trying out in your home this year.

What Design Trends Are “In” for 2022

Go With Green

We saw this coming, right? Both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore named shades of green as their “color of the year”. This is a trend I’ve seen coming since 2020, but it’s finally hit the main stage. You’ll see both lighter sage green and deeper forest green colors emerge in a variety of places including accent walls, furniture and decor, and of course kitchens.

Bringing Back Brown

@amberinteriors

If we look back at 2021, again our friends at Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore were onto something with our fascination with brown. Gone are the days of gray. Deep and light brown tones alike are having a big moment in 2022 maybe it has something to do with the rise in popularity of “California casual style” we think Amber Interiors might have had something to do with it?

Bold & Darker

In sort all white muted is being replaced in favor of a higher contrast color palette. While I don’t think white walls or even white kitchens are out of style in 2022 I do think they should be met with deeper warmer colors to stay on trend. It’s really all about adding depth and contrast. You can start to introduce richer colors into your home in your accessories and rugs. Then when your confidence is soaring try a dark accent wall color or tile backsplash add greater dimension and a focal point to your home.

Something Old, Something New

@wdesigncollective

Everything that is old can be made new again, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing in 2022. Whether you call it Modern Traditional style or Modern Classic we’re seeing the mashup between old & ornate with sleek & minimalist and I’ve got to say, we’re loving it! Not only is this a trendy style, but it’s also a more sustainable one too. Those old “they don’t make them like this any more pieces” are being reinvented and placed alongside contemporary furnishings for a look that never really goes out of style.

Organic Inspired Shapes & Surfaces

This is a huge trend in 2022 that started last year. We’re all still recovering from 2020 and with that comes a desire to go back to what is simpler like nature. The introduction of organic shapes and materials has been the added “zen” I think we all need. Not only will you continue to see lots of exposed wood, concrete, ceramics, and other organic materials you’ll also see this trend emerge in furniture and art. More organic shaped and sculpted furniture like side tables and even sofas will be “all the rage” in 2022. We love the carefree natural way the organic trend is hitting, but I wonder if cuved sofas will really having staying power?

Quiet Spaces

Now this is a trend I can 100% get behind. We all realized our open concept spaces might have been a little to open in 2020 and have now discovered our inner introvert. A trend we’re seeing is the addition of quiet spaces. Rooms that don’t really serve a formal purpose other than just to be quiet. These could be formal living rooms that have bene turning into more casual sitting areas, a zen room or garden, or even a home office that is secluded. Basically ladies, this is your hiding place - get you one!

Artisan Focus

Probably more subtle than the other trends, this is one I’m in particular paying attention to. It’s the rise of the artisan. We’re seeing people turn to more local and regional artisans for their decor and furnishings. This is a great way to add something truly unique and special to you in your home. These items are likely of much higher quality than what you would find in big box stores and come with their own unique perspective and flare. It’s another way to have a more sustainable decorating style and support someone’s enormous talent while you’re at it1

What Design Trends Are “Out” for 2022

I could go on and on naming the trends that are out in 2022. While many might say all white or white kitchens are out, I wouldn’t say they are “all the way out” I think you’ll see white stay popular for the next several years. If anything because of the value it brings to resale. Similarly, I’ve had several people say they think shiplap is out and I disagree. I see shiplap hanging on and reinventing itself in new contexts amongst more modern styles. But I see what you’re getting at. While I certainly don’t think shiplap is out, I definitely think the style that made it famous is out.

This brings us to the only real “out” all of the “experts” can agree on… modern farmhouse. It was nice while it lasted but it’s time to take the gunmetal decor basket down, retire the cotton, and lay the word sign to rest. It’s a good general rule of thumb that if you can decorate your home by making one trip to the hobby lobby, it’s probably not the best look. The good news is many of the top design styles of the day are borrowing elements and inspiration from the farmhouse style so you likely won’t have to look far for new inspiration.
